Private hire & taxi drivers

Accountants who actually understand driving.

If you drive for Uber, Bolt or Veezu, your tax is not the same as a shopkeeper's. We do this every day — mileage claims, licence and plate costs, vehicle finance, and the operator statements that catch people out.

No paperwork, no appointment. We just need a few details.

Who do you drive for?

We will email you a 6-digit code to confirm your address.

What we handle

The things that cost drivers money

Every one of these comes up in the first conversation with a driver who has been filing their own return. None of them are unusual — they are just specific to the trade.

route

Mileage or actual costs — whichever pays you more

Most drivers default to one and never check the other. We work out both for your year and use whichever leaves more in your pocket, then hold you to it consistently, because HMRC will not let you switch back and forth on the same vehicle.

receipt_long

Your Uber or Bolt statement is not your tax return

The operator reports gross fares. Your service fee, booking fees, tolls and the VAT treatment on commission all have to be handled properly, and the figure you are taxed on is not the figure on your statement.

savings

The costs drivers forget to claim

Private hire licence, vehicle licence, DBS, medical, PHV insurance, plate fees, radio or circuit fees, valeting, dashcam, phone and data, breakdown cover. Miss these and you are paying tax on money you never kept.

directions_car

Vehicle finance, hire or rent-to-buy

How you got the car changes what you can claim. PCP, hire purchase, a weekly rental from the operator and a car you already owned are four different answers, and getting it wrong is expensive in both directions.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

Quarterly reporting is coming in for self-employed people above the income threshold. We will tell you plainly whether it applies to you and when, and we will handle the filings when it does.

If HMRC asks questions

Ride-hailing income is reported to HMRC by the operators, so mismatches get noticed. We keep your records in a state where a query is a short conversation rather than an investigation.

Questions drivers ask us

I drive for Uber and Bolt at the same time. Is that a problem?expand_more

Not at all, and it is very common. Both are the same trade for tax purposes, so it is one set of accounts and one tax return. We reconcile the statements from each operator so nothing is counted twice or missed.

Do I need to register as self-employed?expand_more

Yes, if you are driving on your own account rather than as an employee. If you have not registered yet we will do it for you as part of signing up — there is a deadline of 5 October following the end of the tax year in which you started, and penalties for missing it.

Should I be VAT registered?expand_more

Most drivers are below the threshold and should not register. Some benefit from it, and the position changed for operators in recent years, so it is worth a proper look rather than a guess. We will tell you honestly which side of the line you are on.

I have not done a return for a couple of years.expand_more

You are not the first and it is fixable. Bring us what you have and we will bring the years up to date and deal with HMRC about penalties. It is far better handled than ignored — the penalties compound.

What if I stop driving partway through the year?expand_more

That is fine. Your return covers the period you traded. If you go into employment we will make sure your PAYE and self-employment are handled together so you do not overpay.
