Liverpool's economy leans heavily towards visitors, food and drink, and the creative sector clustered in the Baltic Triangle. That makes for accounting work dominated by VAT, seasonal cash flow and payroll — the areas where small errors repeat every week until somebody notices.
Serving Liverpool city centre and L1, Baltic Triangle, Ropewalks and the wider Merseyside.

Compare the twoHospitality is the sector we do most work for in Liverpool, and VAT is where the money is won or lost. The liability of food and drink is genuinely intricate — hot food to take away, cold food eaten in, catering supplied at an event, and the difference between a standard-rated and a zero-rated item that looks identical on the shelf. A misclassification does not happen once; it repeats on every transaction until somebody checks, and HMRC can assess four years back. We review the till mapping rather than assuming it is right.
Tips and service charges bring their own rules. The allocation of tips to staff through a tronc, properly run and independently controlled, can be outside National Insurance, which is a material saving for a venue with a large team. Run carelessly, it is a PAYE liability with penalties attached. The law on tipping now also obliges employers to pass tips to workers in full and to keep records, so the arrangement needs to be documented rather than informal.
Seasonality in a visitor economy makes cash flow, not profit, the thing that closes businesses. A profitable restaurant with a January VAT quarter and a quiet trading month is a familiar problem on Merseyside. We build the VAT and PAYE liabilities into a forward view so the money is set aside in the good months, and where a payment is genuinely going to be missed we approach HMRC for a time to pay arrangement before it becomes a default rather than after.
The Baltic Triangle's studios, agencies and production companies bring different work. Project revenue straddling a year end, freelance crew whose employment status has to be assessed properly rather than assumed, and for film, television, animation and video games the audio-visual expenditure credits, which are generous and heavily conditional. Certification and the cultural test have to be handled alongside the accounting rather than after it.
Liverpool's rental market is shaped by two large universities and a substantial city-centre apartment sector. Student and HMO letting brings licensing obligations that vary by ward, and city-centre flats bring service charges and ground rents that are often deducted incorrectly. Furnished holiday lettings were a distinct and more favourable regime, and the abolition of that regime changes the position for anyone letting short-term to visitors — a real issue in a city with this much tourism.
For landlords generally the mortgage interest restriction and Making Tax Digital for Income Tax are the two live issues. Quarterly reporting for those above the income threshold is a genuine change of routine, and it is better set up in advance than discovered at a deadline.
Fees are fixed monthly and include the phone calls. For a hospitality business that means you can ring about a VAT question in the middle of service without wondering what it will cost.
Most of our work is done online, so where you are in Merseyside makes no difference to the service — but we are happy to meet in person if you would rather.
