Manchester's client base looks nothing like the rest of Greater Manchester's. Agencies and studios in the Northern Quarter and Ancoats, contractors moving between engagements, professional practices around Spinningfields, and one of the largest student rental markets in the country. The questions are about IR35, R&D relief, share schemes and portfolio structure rather than about getting the books straight.

What we do
We are twenty minutes up the road in Bolton, which means a Manchester client gets an accountant who will actually come to a meeting. Fees are fixed monthly and quoted before we start, which tends to compare well with the city-centre firms.
Filed on time and checked for every allowance you are entitled to, so you are not paying more than you owe.
Estimate your taxYear-end accounts, Corporation Tax returns and Companies House filings, handled together so nothing is missed.
Corporation Tax calculatorWeekly or monthly payroll, payslips, P60s, P45s and auto-enrolment submissions, run for you.
Take-home pay calculatorMaking Tax Digital submissions and books kept up to date through the year, not scrambled together in January.
VAT calculatorRental accounts, Section 24 finance costs and Capital Gains Tax when you sell.
Landlord tax calculatorWhether to incorporate, how to draw your income, and what to put aside for the next tax bill.
Compare the twoManchester has the largest creative and digital cluster outside London, and agencies are the single biggest group we act for in the city. The accounting problems are specific: revenue recognised across projects that straddle a year end, freelancers who may or may not be employees for tax purposes, client expenses recharged at cost or at margin, and the perennial question of whether the development work qualifies for R&D relief. Most agencies we meet have never been asked the R&D question properly.
That relief is worth being careful about. The rules tightened considerably — the merged scheme, the additional information form that must be filed before the claim, and HMRC's much harder line on what counts as an advance in science or technology. A great deal of agency work does not qualify, and claiming for it invites an enquiry that costs more than the relief. Where a genuine technical uncertainty is being resolved, the claim is worth making and worth documenting properly. We will tell you which situation you are in.
Contractors are the other large group. Whether an engagement falls inside or outside IR35 has been the client's own problem since the off-payroll rules moved the determination to the end client for medium and large businesses, and the practical result in Manchester is a mix: some contracts inside, some outside, sometimes both within one tax year. We handle the payroll for inside-IR35 work, the company accounts for the rest, and keep the two from contaminating each other.
The rental market here is unlike anywhere else we cover. Manchester and Salford between them hold an enormous student and young-professional letting sector, and a large share of it is HMO rather than single lets. HMOs bring licensing, different mortgage products, and a materially different repairs-and-renewals profile. The mortgage interest restriction hits geared portfolios hard, and for landlords at scale the incorporation question becomes genuinely finely balanced rather than obviously not worth it.
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax now brings landlords and sole traders above the income threshold into quarterly reporting. For a Manchester landlord with several properties this is a real change in workload, not a formality. We set clients up on software that handles it rather than leaving them with a spreadsheet and a deadline.
Professional practices — solicitors, consultants, surveyors, architects — bring partnership and LLP work. Profit allocation between members, the tax reserving that stops a member being caught short in January, and the basis period reform that changed how profits are taxed for unincorporated businesses. We deal with all three.
For companies with staff, share incentives come up often in Manchester's tech sector. EMI options are the usual answer and are generous, but they have to be granted correctly, valued with HMRC agreement, and notified within the deadline, or the tax advantage is simply lost. It is a straightforward thing to get right in advance and impossible to fix afterwards.
Most of our work is done online, so where you are in Greater Manchester makes no difference to the service — but we are happy to meet in person if you would rather.
