Accountants in Birmingham

Your Dedicated Local Accountant Birmingham

Birmingham has the largest concentration of private hire drivers we act for outside London, and a Clean Air Zone that decides directly whether a driver's vehicle is worth running. Alongside that we work with manufacturers and jewellers in and around the Jewellery Quarter, creative businesses in Digbeth, and a broad base of trades and independent retail.

Making, trading and driving in the West Midlands

Birmingham's Clean Air Zone charges non-compliant vehicles for entering the city centre, and for a private hire driver working the city that charge is a daily operating cost with a direct effect on which vehicle makes sense. The charge itself is a deductible business expense on working days. More importantly it changes the arithmetic on replacing a car: a compliant or electric vehicle avoids the charge, and the capital allowances position on a low-emission car is markedly more favourable than on a higher-emission one. We work that calculation through with drivers properly rather than in the abstract.

For drivers generally, the central decision is between claiming mileage at the approved rates and claiming actual running costs with capital allowances on the vehicle. It genuinely goes either way depending on the car, the annual distance and how it was financed, and once a basis is chosen for a vehicle you are largely committed to it. HMRC receives income data directly from Uber, Bolt and the licensed operators, so the figures on the return need to reconcile to what they already hold. Birmingham City Council also requires a tax check before a licence renewal.

The Jewellery Quarter remains a genuine manufacturing district, and precious metals bring accounting particularities. Stock valuation where the underlying metal price moves substantially, hallmarking and assay costs, and the VAT position on investment gold, which is exempt under a special scheme while jewellery is not. Businesses dealing in high-value goods also have money laundering supervision obligations, and the record-keeping that goes with them.

Digbeth's creative and events sector brings project-based revenue, freelance status questions and, for production companies, the audio-visual expenditure credits. The employment status of long-term freelancers is the recurring risk: a freelancer used continuously on the same terms as an employee is a PAYE liability waiting to be assessed, and the assessment reaches backwards.

Birmingham's construction sector runs on CIS, and the city has had sustained development activity. Contractor returns monthly, subcontractor verification, and reclaiming overpaid deductions — for limited companies against in-year PAYE liabilities rather than waiting for the year end. We regularly find several thousand pounds of unclaimed CIS when a construction business moves to us.

The rental market across Sparkhill, Moseley and the wider city includes a substantial amount of HMO and multi-let stock, with selective licensing in a number of wards. The mortgage interest restriction, the repairs-versus-improvements line, and now quarterly reporting under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax for landlords above the threshold are the three things worth getting settled in advance.

Fees are fixed and quoted before we start. For drivers that means a single agreed fee for the return with no surprises, and the phone calls included.

Questions

Accountants in Birmingham — your questions answered

Yes, on days you are working — it is an ordinary business running cost. The bigger question is whether it is worth changing vehicle. A compliant or electric car avoids the charge entirely and attracts considerably better capital allowances, so over a few years the difference can be substantial. We do that calculation with your actual mileage and charges rather than in general terms.
